I chose to do anti-bullying games which had to be none violent with animated figures. The project didn't work properly in the beginning because there was no software to make this kind o games. The software we had was always violent so that didn't work. We tried downloading something that worked but that was violent as well. In the end we had to make a keynote explaining what bullying is and explaining what we did. The keynote is still ok but we could have done a better job if we had time. The plan and create stage didn't work properly at all. We couldn't do anything with the game machines so that was bad. We realize that you asked for an interactive game but we were unable to find a suitable piece of software. So instead we have created a keynote with homemade music made on garage band. We look forward to presenting it to you next week. Here are some samples of the project for you.

Best Regards

Dylan

Project Designer

Dylanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15202022057958881569noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4270561222814701038.post-39759275377756226912009-03-14T21:57:00.000-07:002009-03-14T22:06:40.184-07:00Keynote and Garage BandToday I started to work on our keynote. It is going to be a reflection of our difficulties finding software that we could make games with and a keynote giving information about bullying. Here are some screen shots of what I have done so far. Today Felix worked on the garage band piece which we are going to put on our keynote. We have been trying to evaluate games and figure out what we want or dont want to include in our game.

I visited this site http://www.freebestgame.com/playgames/426/super-mario-flash-2.html where I was playing a Mario game. One thing that Felix and I decided upon was no blood and killing because we didn't feel that teachers would allow their students to play the game then. And that wasnt our objective.

We have also looked at other very similar games. It also includes advice and information about friends, family and school. If you are having trouble in a certain area, be sure to check out PBSKids.

http://pbskids.org/itsmylife/friends/bullies/

This is not as interactive as PBSKids however it does refer to PBSKids often. This site is more suitable for an older age group than PBSKids is. This blog shows individual cases of bullying, causes of bullying, solutions and it looks at all of the different types and ways of bullying. This could be a good way to talk about personal bullying experiences then you might also be able to get feedback from other viewers about what to do or ways to help.

http://sandeelee.blogs.com/

Dylanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15202022057958881569noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4270561222814701038.post-28538467263834733822009-02-14T20:28:00.000-08:002009-02-15T22:53:17.431-08:00iWeb Evaluation Our first project this term in IT has been to design a website for a client about Climate Change.

I feel that my product works very well. I think the main reason for this is the user friendly layout among other things. My use of graphics and a wide variety of media has made it a very dynamic site. With many different ways to learn about Climate Change. Wether it be a simple graphic, animoto or an informational video.

I believe that it fulfills all of my expectations and I believe it does it all well. With a large variety of information and media.

I think that I worked pretty well throughout the cycle. The one area I feel I could've planned better was during the create stage. I didn't realize that we were going be working on other projects this term so I was doing everything in a lot of detail. After I had started doing it in a lot of detail and I realized that we were going to be working on another project I decided to continue doing it in detail. The only drawback to doing this is that it has taken more time than we have been given. So I am going to have to finish over the long weekend but I that I will be satisfied with the final product.

During the Investigation stage we research our topics a lot. Getting a very good general idea of what we would be writing about. Also we slowly started to learn about the programs that we can use to make websites. Such as Dreamweaver, Piczo and iWeb.

The next stage was Design. In this project we combined the stages Design and Plan. We did this by drawing out a sketch of what we wanted our homepage to look like. Also we had to decide what pages we were going to include in our website. I decided to include Home, The issues up close, Photos, Videos, Cool Sites to visit, Fun Fast Climate Changing Facts and more.

The second to last stage was Create. Here is where we actually combine all of our research and planning along with designing together. I found that iWeb was a very professional looking and easy to use piece of software. I enjoyed using it as I found it a very effective way to convey information.

The final stage is Evaluate. Of course that is what I am doing right now.

Overall I really enjoyed this project. I feel that I also did a good job with my site. I would definitely use iWeb again for a wide range of projects and subjects. I look forward to starting the new unit!

Dylanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15202022057958881569noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4270561222814701038.post-66169120757737292532009-01-28T23:57:00.000-08:002009-01-31T21:20:34.928-08:00Meeting with Client
1.) Your design and layout of your web pages - does it fit your drawing/plan.

To be honest I have not followed my pre-project drawing and plan because I wasn't sure of what iWeb would have to offer. I didn't know if there would be templates or we would all have to start with a blank page. I assumed the that it was gong to be blank but I turned out to be wrong, there are a wide range of templates. For this project I choose the template "Dark Room." It is a very simple and minimalist template. It has a black background and a link bar at the top. Which navigates you around the site.
Scroll down to see a "sneak preview of some of the pages"

2.) Your topic and research. What have you done in class?

During class I have been researching my topic and trying to learn how to use iWeb. The topic I am researching is Climate Change and Global Warming. We have been bookmarking useful websites and blogs to help us with our research and later on. then we have been transferring the information and graphics onto our websites.

3.) We are using apple Macs which I am really happy about because Macintosh is what I first learnt to use computers with. I also use Mac at me so it is an easy switch between the two.
Investigate:

Investigation is the first part of the MYP design cycle. A series of steps in which we follow when we are creating something. In this case we are going to be creating a website explaining how web 2.0 tools can help us in the event of a natural disaster.

For this unit our guiding question is "How can we use Web 2.0 tools as a community to help another community when a natural disaster strikes?"

My first thoughts about this question is the main reason we would be able to use Web 2.0 tools when a disaster strikes would be to communicate. For example I check the New York Times everyday for news. Even if I am not in a place I can still learn about it through blogs that reporters have set up or other stories. This is a form communication that we can use to find out about events that are happening around the world. Another way that we can communicate is that people can send images to others around the world. This can easily convey the level of damage and the effect of the disaster. Another advantage of using images is that people can understand them no matter what language, culture or background. Also we can use programs such as email or skype. This way we are using more private methods so usually it is only between 2 people. This information that has been shared between those two people can be spread by word of mouth or be posted in articles, blogs, twitter, email and networking websites.

As I said before pictures are very useful because they can be used to communicate information in different countries where different languages are spoken, so it does not have to be translated. We can easily share, past and view images on flickr.com . A website that allows people to post and comment on photos. For example there would be a victim of the tsunami in Thailand and post images of the effect on flickr. Then people around the world can see first hand what has happened and what the effect and damage is.

<img src="webkit-fake-url://B1C4CC30-BE23-4A50-8744-8ED12BCAFF11/flickr_logo.jpg" alt="<span class=" id="SPELLING_ERROR_5" />flickr_logo.jpg">

Another software that can be used in a natural disaster is Skype. This could be used in case someone doesnt have access to a phone that could call overseas, but they did have internet. They could use skype so that they could let family and friends know that they were okay and not hurt, or the opposite. They would be able to do this just with the use of internet.

<img src="webkit-fake-url://59671C12-BADC-4B41-877F-11BED376D676/skype_logo_connect-web.jpg" alt="<span class=" id="SPELLING_ERROR_12" />skype_logo_connect-web.jpg">

We could also use email to let people know that we are okay. This is a good way to let people know your condition because you dont need high speed internet for it to work, like you would using other software such was Skype. Also you dont have to be on the internet for a long time--so if your internet time was limited you would be able to meet the deadline.

<img src="webkit-fake-url://B1D7D5E8-065E-4EBB-9385-DFDD33475C91/gmail-logo1.jpg" alt="<span class=" id="SPELLING_ERROR_20" />gmail-logo1.jpg">

In terms of hardware we could use devices such as iphones, blackberrys or other smart phones. We could use them for many of the above softwares such as skype, email or flickr. Another way it could help us could be if they were to be looking at the news on their handheld, they might see that there was a tsunami warning. There are also Global Positinting Systems so if they were lost and displaced during the disaster they would be able to find their way home. Also they could check weather if there was going to be a bad storm. Most of all they would be able to use the phone to call people in case they needed assistance such as an ambulance or other services like it.

The final hardware we could use would be a laptop. You might be thinking why a laptop and not a desktop. The answer is simple. Portability. You could have it with you in your hotel room, at a campsite, on the beach or even on hill where you could be hiding from flooding. We could use this for all of the above softwares. You could even use it for the phone to download files and

other items.

. <img src="webkit-fake-url://42954388-7BF3-4DD0-9965-3A7CB69F5235/designCycleEn.png" alt="<span class=" id="SPELLING_ERROR_28" />designCycleEn.png">

Dylanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15202022057958881569noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4270561222814701038.post-49275198132919113392008-11-22T20:40:00.000-08:002008-11-23T23:15:31.207-08:00Evaluation and Reflection: Final Stage of the MYP Design CycleThis term during Information Systems (Robotics) we looked into the basics of Robotics. Some topics within this unit were the rules of robotics, the basic components of robots, merging robot technology and more. This unit gave us a good understanding of what robots are and what they can be used for. Throughout this unit we poster the information we found on our blogs and wikis. So we have a good document of what we have learnt this term, which we will be able to use for future reference. For this term the objective was to 'build an autonomous robot.'

I felt that using our wiki spaces as a tool for documenting information worked really well and was very useful. This was because we could not loose our Wiki the same way that we would loose a piece of paper or a notebook. Although at times there were some technical difficulties such as documents saving. This happened to me on a few occasions, one page refused to safe-the window would 'not respond' every time I tried to save. Some things that I felt brought down the level of the project were the programming software that we were supposed to use to program the robot because there were problems downloading the software onto all of the computers. Another problem that we had was the hardware that we were using for this project, mindstorms. Mindstorms is an easy to use robotics building kit that you can buy and all of the pieces that you need are in the kit, it also includes a catalogue which contains a host of robots that you can build by using the pieces in the kit. Mindstorms created problems for this project because in most kits not all of the pieces were in the kit. This made it difficult to build the robot in many cases. I don't think that this is a fault of mindstorms I just believe it was our individual case. If we had mindtorms and robolab all working correctly then I believe everything would have gone very well because the two products are designed to work with the other.

Through this project all of the programs that we used were Wikispaces, Blogger, Animoto, Windows logo Maker, YouTube, Google, Robolab, Mindstorms and other Internet tools.

During this project we didn't fully achieve our objective due to loss of time through technical difficulties. This meant that the greater majority of the class was not able to program their robot. So most of the class only got the chance to finish building their robots. This was disappointing but at least we realized what we had to do. Thanks to useful tool such as YouTube we know what our robot should have been able to do.

I believe that this project could have been improved by the Lego Mindstorms and Robolab being tested before we started the project so that we could have a clearer idea of what we would be able to get achieved in the project. Also if there were obstacles that we knew about before the project then we could plan the project so that we plan around the problems.

Here are some of my findings from this unit. Which was to build a robot. We also learnt about the design cycle and how it can help us when we are doing projects. The design cycle is tool that is used throughout the MYP programme. It can be incorperated in all technololgy subjects such as systems, I.T. and M.T. So once we had learnt about the design cycle we started with the first step out of 4. Investigate. So we decided what we were going to do and why. We wanted to build a robot because it could help make our life easier and robots on a larger scale could make our life safer.
Robots
Throughout the investigation stage we were learning about the components and technical side of robots as well as the benificary side of robotics. We learnt that every robot has to have a procesor, power, sensors and actuators. Most of the time a robot should be autonamous (independent.) Robots can be used in many different fields. They can be used to guard countries or in the military. For example South Koreas boarders are guarded by robots because it is very dangerous. There are robots that go into the very depths of our seas while humans are watching its discoveries from a boat above the water. Robots can be used in the production of products such as cars. Human's benefit from this because companies prefer their cars to be consistant. So that all of the cars look the same. Also they can produce cars that are consistanly accurate. Robots are also cheaper than manual labour becuase they can work 24/7/365 without food, water or rest. The only thing that robots need is power.
The Rules...
Like everything robotics also has rules. Here are some of Issac Asimov's rules. He is the original writer of the a book called iRobot which was turned into the movie iRobot.

A robot may not injure a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

There is robot named after Issac Asimov. It is called Asimo made by Honda. Here are some videos of the things that Asimo can do.

Remeber

To follow the design cycle if you are doing a similar project because we discovered that if you skip a stage you will not complete a sucessful project. We tried this last thursday. Just keep the following in mind you cant build a robot, or anything for that matter with out outlining each step that you are going to take.

So this first part of the year has given me alot of knowledge and skills that I will use through out this year and my education.Dylanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15202022057958881569noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4270561222814701038.post-87848369158062934142008-09-22T00:58:00.000-07:002008-09-22T00:59:02.821-07:00My Wiki! Please visit my wikispaces where I am currently investigating robots and the design cycle.
